Home Composting With Worms

With over 90 Million households, it is thought that as much as 20% of all landfill materials are composed of lawn and garden waste. It is much more environmentally sound and efficient to deal with the waste in the backyard before it gets hauled to a facility. In addition, it is estimated that there is 6.9 million tons of food waste that is dumped into the waste stream every year. It makes sense to deal with this garbage where it is produced, at the home, office or school.
Most books and other sources talk about sing several species of red worms to do this worm composting. While these worms are very good for converting waste into castings, they are not very good for fishing bait because they are so small. We have found that in a home composting environment, our Cultured Nightcrawler works just as well at turning waste into castings and has the added benefit of providing a source of GOOD bait worms for the home composter. This worm will reach 6-8 inches in length and is much easier and more interesting to observe in your compost bin. They are very good breeders and will lay as many cocoons as these other varieties of worms. However, the growth rate and cocoon production for any worm will always depend upon maintaining the proper conditions. In addition, if you feel more comfortable using red worms, we sell them as well and we can accommodate any size order you are looking for.
There are many types of home composters varying from expensive, prefabricated containers to just using a simple Tupperware tray. If you follow instructions and pay attention to what you are doing, they will all work. It all depends on how much or little money you want to spend.
