A Racine company that produces organic fertilizer bought a 51,560-square-foot building in Union Grove and plans to double its work force over the next two years.
The new facility at 1577 N. 11th Ave. is the second for Unco Industries Inc., which has been in business for more than 33 years, said president Tom Chapman. The company produces fertilizer that is sold under the Wiggle Worm Soil Builder brand and also sells its product to other companies to be mixed into potting soil.
“We’ve been looking for the past year-and-a-half to add to our current facility and even that was a patch, and we’ve been leasing warehouse space,” Chapman said.
Unco’s new building was originally built for American Roller Co., which moved to a different property in Union Grove, and has been listed for sale for a long time, said Paul McBride, a broker with RFP Commercial Inc., Milwaukee. McBride represented Unco and seller Union Grove Joint Venture LLP of Union Grove, Ill.
The building sold for $400,000, according to the Racine County Register of Deeds.
Chapman said he plans to move Unco’s offices, warehousing and some manufacturing to the Union Grove building from its Racine location by the first of the year. The company will continue to use its Racine building to manufacture fertilizer, a process that involves having worms eat through compost in a temperature- and moisture-controlled environment, he said. The company has nine employees now, but will add six more next year and will double its employment over the next two years, he said.
